Local Link Reviews: Casa Mia, Caerphilly

With the January blues in full effect, the Local Link Magazine team decided a mid-week pick me up would be best served ‘Mediterranean’. Last week, my team and I took a trip to Casa Mia; a family-run restaurant, overlooking Caerphilly Castle, on The Twyn in the town centre.

Along with its brilliant views of the biggest castle in Wales, the restaurant caters for a wide range of customer tastes, from tapas to pasta, from pizza to steaks.

On arrival, we received a warm and friendly reception from the staff. To start, Ryan and Paul ordered the ‘Funghi All’Aglio, or sautéed mushrooms in garlic butter and white wine. Rachael and I had the Gamberoni All’Aglio, or King Prawns served with garlic, bay leaf in a white wine sauce.

For the main course, Ryan and Paul had the 8oz fillet steak with a black peppercorn sauce. Both steaks were accompanied with mixed vegetables and seasoned potatoes. Ryan and Paul agreed the steak was cooked to perfection, and the black peppercorn sauce was the best they’d ever tried. Rachael chose a meal from the specials board; pan fried sea bass in a lemon sauce, with mixed vegetables and sautéed potatoes. I had the Tagliatelle alla Gamberoni; pasta with prawns, garlic, chilli, olive oil and a rocket garnish. The prawns and pasta tasted so fresh, and the chilli gave the dish a nice kick.

For dessert, Ryan, Paul and I all had the Kir Royale Cheesecake; the perfect pudding to finish a wonderful meal. Rachael passed on a pudding, as she was too full from the first two courses.

Needless to say, we all left Casa Mia with full stomachs and smiles on our faces. I was particularly pleased with the large range of choices, catering for different tastes and dietary requirements. Now, when I return with my whole family, I am safe in the knowledge that Casa Mia will happily cater for my son, who has Coeliac Disease, as they have a range of great, gluten-free options. All the more reason to return to this restaurant, with beautiful food to match it’s beautiful view.
