A pioneering tinnitus treatment has been introduced for the first time at a hearing health business in South Wales, offering new hope to millions of sufferers.

It is estimated more than 3,000,000 people in Wales suffer from tinnitus – the sensation of hearing a ringing, whizzing, roaring, buzzing, hissing or other type of continuous sound which has no external source.

Malmo Hearing Ltd, which has outlets in Bridgend and Newport as well as satellite clinics across South Wales, is now licensed by The Tinnitus Clinic to provide its unique evidence-based Tinnitus Desensitisation Therapy™ (TDT).

TDT is a new therapeutic pathway specially designed for patients who suffer with invasive tinnitus. TDT provides a bespoke range of therapies selected to meet an individual’s tinnitus acoustic profile and experience of tinnitus. Therapeutic techniques are used to control tinnitus awareness with the long-term goal of encouraging the brain to filter out the tinnitus perception from consciousness.

Lead Audiologist at Malmo Hearing, Mal Johnston, has many years’ experience in the hearing health profession and is fully trained in the latest innovations, testing procedures and products.

Mal said: “Bringing The Tinnitus Clinic to this area will enable millions of sufferers to have improved access to life changing treatment.

“Tinnitus affects 30 per cent of people at some point in their lives. For some, it’s a persistent problem and can have a significant impact on everyday activities, with severe cases causing distress, insomnia, and depression.

“It’s a common myth that people just ‘have to live with tinnitus’. But this simply isn’t true, there are treatments that can help, and I’d urge anyone suffering to get in touch.

“Patients can self-refer for an appointment or be referred by a GP or other healthcare professional.”

The Tinnitus Clinic is the leading provider of exclusive evidence-based tinnitus treatments in the UK and has also recently expanded to provide treatments in Malta.

Malmo Hearing Ltd was founded in 2007 by Mal and Mo Johnston. An independent, family run hearing health business, it specialises in Hearing Assessments, Hearing Aids, Hearing Aid Accessories, Ear Wax Removal, Hearing Protection, Tinnitus Treatments and Medical Legal Assessments.

Members of the British Society of Hearing Aid Audiology and registered with the Health and Care Professions Council, Malmo Hearing Ltd is a multi-award-winning business including: National Audiology Award Winners 2017, South Wales Business Growth Customer Service Excellence Award Winners 2016 and 2017, and The Voice Magazine Customer Service Excellence Award Winners 2017.

In addition to the two main branches in Bridgend and Newport, which are open 6 days a week, Malmo also has partnerships with Pharmacies, NHS Medical Centres, and Opticians throughout South Wales

Mal continued: “We’re proud of our family business and everything we’ve achieved.

“We play a big part in the local community, supporting Welsh Deaf Rugby, The British Tinnitus Association, and Action on Hearing Loss among others.

“Through our links with Starkey Laboratories, we also support The Starkey Hearing Foundation and in October and May 2018, Malmo staff attended a hearing mission in Yerevan, Armenia, to help fit more than 3,000 men, women and children with Hearing Aids.

“We’re really excited about this next step for our business – we very much look forward to expanding the scope of our practice further as the only licensed partner of The Tinnitus Clinic in South Wales.”
