Review: Beauty and the Beast at The New Theatre

‘Twas several nights before Christmas, and my family and I took a trip to the New Theatre in Cardiff to see this year’s pantomime performance of ‘Beauty and the Beast’. The show was packed full of British pantomime delights; from the crazy costumes, to a tonne of audience participation – and cracking jokes fit for both the children and the adults.

Although the story of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ is familiar to most, I won’t spoil the show for those people who will be seeing it in its final week on stage. Needless to say, the performance is packed with heroes beating villains, kindling friendships, budding romances and belly-aching laughter.

Many familiar faces fill the star-studded cast for the show. First, former rugby player, Gareth ‘Alfie’ Thomas plays ‘Alfie‘, a fitness instructor.  Thomas is a seasoned pantomime actor at the New Theatre, and it showed – as he delivered another brilliant performance this year.

Later on, Mike Doyle steps on stage, playing the pantomime dame, Kylie Kipling. His flamboyant costumes and funny antics made Doyle one of the highlights of the show.

Naomi Slights and Ben Richards play the lead roles as Belle and the Beast, while Danny Bayne plays Clarence Bridge, the ineligible bachelor who plans to marry Belle. Slights and Richard’s strong chemistry as a couple made the romance between Belle and the Beast all the more magical.

Also, Lisa Riley plays Mrs Potts, a wise housekeeper with brilliant dance moves, a must-see for any Strictly Come Dancing fans.

Alongside the popular musical numbers from Beauty and the Beast, the cast perform a number of pop songs, including hits from the Greatest Showman, and even their own rendition of ‘Baby Shark’.

Although slightly scary in parts, my children loved every second, laughing and smiling through the entire show, along with the adults!

You can still capture some of the Christmas magic, as the show runs until Sunday 13th of January. For more information and to book tickets, call the box office on 02920 878889, or visit their website: http://www.newtheatrecardiff.co.uk/what’s-on/beauty-and-the-beast/
