Etc, Penarth

The city of Cardiff is crammed full of restaurants and bars but, on its doorstep, Penarth has its own brilliant bunch of places to eat and drink.

My husband Ryan and I had heard wonderful things about Etc Penarth, an independently-owned restaurant and bar in the heart of the seaside town.

Etc Penarth offers a range of fusion cuisine, serving lunch, afternoon teas including the gentleman’s afternoon tea, dinner, and drinks options every day. It also hosts a range of exclusive events, from vegan to Moët nights.

We decided to dine from their a la carte evening menu, which offers a fine dining experience.
To start, Ryan had the Get In Ma Belly starter. This consisted of maple-glazed belly pork with burnt apple, sherry vinegar gastric, and zaatar airbag. Zaatar is a condiment made from herbs and spices mixed with toasted sesame seeds and salt.

Ryan loved the maple glaze which added a rich flavour to the succulent pork. I skipped the starter, to make room for the mouth-watering main courses.
We both ordered Mr Steak, a chargrilled, 10z ribeye steak infused with whisky oak smoke, served with slow-roasted cherry tomatoes, portobello mushrooms, and watercress, with twice cooked chips on the side. The steaks were cooked perfectly to our liking and the fresh produce complemented the rich, tender steak.

For dessert, I chose Etc’s Chocolate Orange, a baked Alaska with a chocolate orange kick. The dessert was indulgent, but just as light and creamy as your typical baked Alaska. Ryan opted for Bara Feddw Bailey’s, Drunken Bailey’s Bread in English. The dessert took a twist on the classic bread and butter pudding, swapping the bread for Italian panettone infused with flavours of Bailey’s, orange, and cranberry.

During our meal, we enjoyed hours of excellent entertainment from local performers Debyanne and the Doctor, with show-stopping Motown music.
The food was wonderful and the super-friendly staff and the amazing entertainment made our evening at Etc Penarth extraordinary.  Although we felt very full after our food, we managed a good boogie to the brilliant music. We can’t wait to book on the next Motown night!

You can book a table for lunch, dinner, or on one of their entertainment evenings on their website.  Etc Penarth can also accommodate private hire for weddings and other celebrations.
