Seren Diemwnt, Llandaff, Cardiff
Set in the historic village of Llandaff, a short walk from beautiful Llandaff Cathedral and near the birthplace of the famed children’s author Roald Dahl, Head Chef Gethin Rhys has created a successful restaurant known for its use of mouth-watering local produce.
We found the welcoming, attractive restaurant was decorated with sparkling white fairy lights and we were soon seated and looking at our food choices.
To start, Ryan chose the parsley and ham hock with apple compote and tonka bean mayonnaise. This was something he had never tried before and the presentation itself was enough to tempt anyone’s taste buds. It was full of flavour and Ryan was very pleased with his choice. I went for the pan-seared scallops with candied walnuts, crispy kale, and white wine sabayon. I couldn’t tuck into this dish quickly enough. All the ingredients complemented one another beautifully.
For the main course, Ryan was spoiled for choice. After deliberating hard, he opted for the lamp rump with parsley crumble, crispy kale, dauphinoise potato, parnsip puree, and a red wine jus.
Wow – just wow! He was delighted with his choice and can’t wait to go back and try all the other things on the menu.
I choose the Welsh 8oz rib-eye steak topped with a confit of mushroom and truffle-oil butter, rosemary oil-coated hand-made chips and salad. I don’t usually choose steak and, again, I was very pleased with my choice. The steak was cooked to perfection .
Last but not least, dessert. I was stuck between two amazing choices, so poor Ryan had to have one of my favourites. He had the caramel chocolate ganache-filled dome. How jealous was I? This came with hot caramel sauce , which was poured over the chocolate dome, melting it into a super delicious warm chocolate and caramel dessert. To be fair, I had my fair share of this wonderful pudding! I was also highly impressed with my choice, the raspberry crème brûlée cheesecake.
I was over the moon when Gethin came down and chatted to us for some time after we had eaten. There is an inspiring story behind the restaurant and we truly wish Gethin all the success his passion for creating delicious food deserves. He is such a talented chef.
I would highly recommend a visit to Seren Diemwnt for a fine dining experience.
